| Local Elected Officials deliver for Meals-on-Wheels
This past week, local mayors and elected officials delivered meals with Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson & Ellis Counties as part of their annual "March for Meals" campaign. Thirty-nine individuals participated in the nationwide event beginning on March 24, delivering alongside 1,000 others throughout the country.
"We were excited that so many participated in our event this year. We have increased our local participation each year," said Amy Jackson, director of development. "This is a great way to increase the awareness of senior hunger right here in our local neighborhoods," she added.
This national event comes at a good time, as recent research studies through the Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) have revealed that the problem of senior hunger in America is indeed growing worse. In fact, Texas is ranked number four in the nation for elderly "food insecurity." Currently, one in nine seniors is at risk of hunger in the United States.
"We encourage anyone who would like to help or be involved anyway that you can; whether that be through volunteering, donating, or just telling others about our services," commented Amy Jackson, director of development.
